Grand Forks got a piece of a massive two-part winter storm that produced tornadoes in Arkansas and 20 foot snow drifts in Duluth, MN. The storm dropped a foot of snow in Grand Forks and brought near blizzard conditions. Music: "Chest in the Attic" by Wayne Gratz.

High winds tore out ahead of a rainstorm, kicking up waves of dust and snapping 10-15 foot long branches off of trees. The wind caught the city by surprise, and by the time a severe thunderstorm warning had been issued, it was too late. Winds peaked at over 60mph according to storm reports from the NWS.

The remnants of a dying thunderstorm skirted Grand Forks early in the morning of May 6. The storm produced about 30 minutes of powerful lightning bolts, but nearly all of them were sheet lightning. The resulting thunder, however, was worth it.

A storm system quickly developed over south central Minnesota in the late morning hours and rapidly became severe as it moved over the western Twin Cities around 2:00pm. From my work in Arden Hills I was able to take some decent photos of the base of the storm and the multitudes of scud clouds that accompanied it.

As a cold front sagged southward across the Twin Cities Metro Area, a series of storm systems developed near St. Cloud and worked through Anoka County in the afternoon. The storm chase was mostly a bust, but I was able to film the departing storms at sunset. See the Chase Log for more information.

Video as the base of a severe thunderstorm redevelops over Lake Superior after passing through Duluth. The scud cloud formations were quite spectacular, as well as the formation of a possible wall cloud to the southeast.
