Storm Games: Flirting with a Nearby Cell
June 21, 2008
5:00pm-9:00pm
Grand Forks, ND
This weekend I decided to take a road trip from Duluth to Grand Forks to see my girlfriend Andrea and my new apartment. On Saturday (June 21) we went for a daylong bike ride around town. A boundary set up just west of Grand Forks shortly before noon, and by lunchtime we were drenched as the first wave of storms moved through Grand Forks. Several other storms fired along this boundary and moved through the city before we retreated back to my apartment. We decided to go out and visit my aunt and her family at a nearby campground just west of the Grand Forks Air Force Base. Just before we left I snapped a photo of yet another line of storms developing to the northwest of Grand Forks (first photo). We arrived at the campground shortly after 5:00pm and had dinner. As we were playing a round of baseball with the kids, I noticed a large CB tower just to our east. I snapped a few photos of the storm before returning to the game (second, third, and fourth photos below). Afterwards as Andrea and I left, we stopped at the entrance of the campground and took one more photo of a thunderhead far off on the western horizon (last photo below). Later that night, I found out that the cell I saw while playing baseball turned severe over Grand Forks and dropped one inch hail over the city. Glad I wasn't biking in that! :)
