Just Passing By: Another Weak Wall Cloud Structure
August 12, 2008
6:00-7:30pm
Anoka and Andover, MN

A strong but not overly impressive severe thunderstorm was on its way from the northwest, but I was enlisted by my mom to go to a Boy Scout meeting in Andover that evening. This dampened the prospects of any sort of chase, but I decided to make the best of the situation. I shot a few photos from my driveway of the storm's large anvil plastered across the western sky just before we left at 6:30pm (photos below).

I made my brother drive so I could take photos of the base of the storm, looming just to the north of Anoka. As we cruised up Ferry Street, I saw what looked to be a lowering in the cloud straight to my north (first photo below). I eagerly began snapping photos of this and other parts of the storm as we turned east onto Bunker Lake Blvd. I lost sight of this lowering after a few minutes as we drove into a more densely populated and wooded area.

I saw another small appendages extending from the base of the storm (first and second photos below), which kept me preoccupied until we arrived at the meeting place near the Andover city hall around 7:00pm. Shortly after our arrival, the storm's gust front passed (remaining photos below) overhead and the rain commenced. We left after a few minutes and drove home through the rain and exited the backside of the storm around 7:30pm.
