Floods can result from many different factors, such as snow melt, heavy rainfall, storm surges, or broken structures (dams, floodwalls, etc.).
2007 |
March 2007 English Coulee- Grand Forks, ND: Warm temperatures and rainfall raised the coulee to bankfull stage, but did little else.
March 21: The coulee jumped over one foot overnight as snows began to melt.
March 26: The coulee dropped, then crested again several days later.
April 2007 Red River- Grand Forks, ND/East Grand Forks, MN: Even though snowfall was lacking over the 2006-2007 winter, the Red River rose about five feet above flood stage and caused some minor flooding in the Grand Forks area.
April 5: I only made it to the river once, several hours after it crested in Grand Forks. The weather was unseasonably cold, which reduced the number of photos I took. With nighttime lows in the single digits above zero, the river froze to every physical object in its way. Thus, when the Red River began to drop, it left some interesting ice sculptures on the bridge piers and trees.
