Funnel Clouds
The Warning
Funnel clouds are swirling vorticies of air that, when touch the ground, become tornadoes. They are usually associated with severe storms but can form in even small cumulus clouds (although these types rarely touch down).
-May 9, 2006 Grand Forks, ND: Cold air rushing in behind a powerful storm complex produced a brief cold-air funnel cloud over the UND campus. These photos were confirmed from the NWS in Grand Forks.-May 9, 2004 Andover, MN: These photos are of a funnel cloud retreating up into a huge wall cloud/shelf cloud at the front of the storm moments after lifting off the ground (touchdown confirmed by NWS). This storm setup is much like the Rogers tornado of September 16, 2006 with the tornado at the front of the rapidly moving storm. I was running while taking the first photo of the funnel--accounting for its blurriness.
