Ice Pillars
Towers in the Night
Ice pillars form on cold winter nights when flat ice crystals floating near the surface of the earth. When artificial lights reflect off these crystals the results are tower of light in the night.
December 1, 2006 Grand Forks, ND- I spotted these pillars on the way back from my car. By the time I got my camera outside they were on a dying trend. These pillars lasted for less than five minutes.
December 6, 2005 Grand Forks, ND- I didn't have a camera that could take night photos when these ice pillars formed, so I used the photo function on my video camera to take these two photos. They are pretty grainy, but you can still see three distinct ice pillars in the center of the images.
