Ice Storms
Coating the Land
Ice storms are one of the most dangerous types of winter storms. These deadly storms arise from freezing rain, rain that freezes on contact with any surface. In meteorological terms, the hydrometeors falls through a warm sector several thousand feet up, becoming raindrops, before hitting a cold sector just above the ground. The result is a thick layer of ice called glaze ice, which can down powerlines and make travel virtually impossible.
November 27-28, 2005 Grand Forks, ND: An ice storm days after Thanksgiving made travel for returning students near impossible.
