Pileus Caps
Nature's Sonic Boom
Pileus caps are smooth, thin clouds that form on the tops of rapidly developing thunderstorms. They are the result of air parcels above the storm being pushed upward and condensing into clouds. Pileus caps rarely last for more than a few minutes and resemble the clouds the form on aircraft moving faster than the speed of sound.
