Shelf Clouds
The Thunderstorm's First Greeting
Shelf clouds form on the front of severe thunderstorms resulting from cool air rush out at the base of the storm pushing up warm, humid air in advance of the storm, creating a cloud that resembles a shelf connected to the storm.
-August 20, 2006 Grand Forks, ND: A shelf cloud appeared out of the darkness as a severe storm rolled through.
-June 24, 2006 Dellwood, MN: Chasing a dying storm in western Washington County, but it still produced a nice shelf cloud.
