2006-2007 Season

2006-2007 Season

October 30, 2006 Grand Forks, ND: The first snowstorm of the season brought about an inch of snow, most of which melted on impact.

December 31, 2006-January 1, 2007 Central Minnesota: A concentrated storm system brought heavy wet snow to much of east central Minnesota on New Years Eve. I got to drive right through it as it peaked in intensity around Elk River, MN. The resulting scenery the following morning was stunning.

February 24-25, 2007 Grand Forks, ND: A massive storm system that stretched from the Gulf of Mexico to Minnesota decided to make a pit stop in Grand Forks. We only got 7 inches officially at the weather service in Grand Forks, but other places south and east of us got clobbered (Winona, MN got 29.5 inches). This was the first time I took the DSLR out on a photo shoot of a storm, so I had fun changing the white balance of the RAW photos.

February 28-March 1, 2007 Grand Forks, ND: It took less than one week for Mother Nature to decide to smash Grand Forks with another snowstorm. This time 11.5 inches fell over the two day event, and 30mph winds on March 2 and 3 brought near blizzard conditions. Here are photos taken shortly after the snow stopped falling at 11:00pm on March 1.

March 15, 2007 Duluth, MN: A freak snowstorm dropped six inches of snow across northeastern Minnesota during my roadtrip to Duluth. I was in the harbor when the snow started and caught some shots of the east wind whipping the snow across a parking lot in the harbor basin.

April 1, 2007 Grand Forks, ND: Well, nature sure pulled an April Fools joke on the residents of NW Minnesota and NE North Dakota. Over an inch of snow fell in the overnight hours, coating the landscape with snow only days after a warm spell had melted the remaining snow from the winter.

April 3, 2007 Grand Forks, ND and Wadena, MN: The weather didn't stop after April 1. Shortly thereafter the jet stream plunged southward, bringing near record low temperatures to most of the country. In Grand Forks, winds close to 40mph and temperatures 20-30 degrees below average caused the windchill to plummet to -10F, turning the clock back to January. On April 3 a snowstorm cut a swath across the northern US from Montana to Maine. The heaviest snowfalls occurred in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (+18 inches), but a few locations in west central Minnesota received a foot of snow. Grand Forks got only 3 inches of snow, but the winds made it feel like a blizzard. The first ten photos are from April 3 in Grand Forks, and the last five photos were taken in Wadena, MN on April 6, after three days of wind had compacted the snow.
