Thunder Shadows
The Spectacle Before the Storm
As the sun sets, the profiles of distant, hidden storms may cast shadows upon upper decks of clouds. These are known as thunder shadows and can be an early warning of an approaching storm.
April 18, 2006 Grand Forks, ND: These storms cast some bizarre shadows on the cloud deck overhead.
June 29, 2005 Anoka, MN: Storms over 60 miles away cast several thunder shadows on the underside of the anvil of a departing storm. The storm hit 2 hours later.
