While I have been writing accounts of storms I've chased since 2006 in the Chase Logs section of this website, there are many other severe weather events I witnessed prior to then that now only exist scattered about as collections of photos in dusty photo albums, notes resting on my computer hard drive, or newspaper articles buried in file cabinets. Here I attempt to pull together every available resource at my disposal (weather charts/analyses, surface and upper air observations, radar/satellite data, photographs, storm reports, media stories, and my own personal accounts) to reconstruct the storm. I will not only cover storms that occurred prior to 2006, but reanalyze more recent events using new data.
Much of the observation (surface, upper air, and radar) data was extracted from the NOAA National Data Climatic Center (NCDC) archives, though some older events required a more creative and thorough approach. In some cases, complete data records simply do not exist for some storms. The program GR2Analyst was used to investigate Level 2 radar data for each storm event, providing a comprehensive and unique view of the storms. Due to the lengthy process it could take to assemble the data for each case, there is no set timetable for how often I will post these case studies. I am hoping to finish one every few months, but only time will tell. Enjoy!
